In your journey to confidently speak up, set boundaries, and navigate tough conversations, you might have some questions. If you’re wondering how to break free from passive habits, handle judgmental people, and say “no” without guilt, you’re not alone.
Here are answers to some of the most common challenges. Still curious? Join our empowering masterclass to learn how to communicate assertively, handle difficult situations with ease, and build healthier, more respectful communication in both work and life.
What is the difference between assertive and aggressive communication?
Assertive communication allows you to express your thoughts and feelings openly and respectfully, without trampling on the rights of others. In contrast, aggressive communication often disregards the feelings of others and can be hostile or confrontational. Assertiveness involves standing up for yourself while maintaining respect for others.
Handling tough conversations starts with staying calm and focused on your goal—finding a solution. Start by clearly defining the issue, listen to all perspectives, and express your needs using assertive language. Phrases like "I feel..." and "I need..." help to keep the conversation respectful and solution-oriented.
When you encounter judgment, it’s important to respond without being defensive. You could say, “I understand your point of view, but I see things differently.” This allows you to express yourself without escalating the situation, and it establishes boundaries around unacceptable behaviour.
Saying "no" is an essential skill for maintaining boundaries and preventing burnout. Start small by practising with situations that are less stressful, then work your way up to more difficult ones. An example of a guilt-free "no" is, “I’m unable to take this on right now, but thank you for thinking of me.” You have the right to prioritise your needs.
Absolutely! This masterclass is designed specifically for professionals who find it difficult to speak up, set boundaries, and manage tough conversations.
