Flow state and the conditions needed to achieve it can be different for every individual. A business cannot simply manifest a flow state; it needs to establish a pattern of behaviours and work triggers that can influence and stimulate individuals and teams to encourage a flow state.
A flow state is the mental state of being fully immersed in an activity, where everything else beyond the immediate task seems to disappear. Colloquially referred to as “being in the zone."
It's not “Zoning out,” where you are unaware of their surroundings (e.g. losing focus on what they are doing).
It's not Mindfulness, when you are intentionally aware of what you are doing.
Is not “Runner’s high,” the post-run euphoric feeling that some runners experience.
It's not “Deep learning,” a term used to describe focusing on something complicated without distraction.
No. Back in the late 1800's German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche described “Rausch” as “the great stimulus to life.” Although the word has several interpretations, Nietzsche first posed that to achieve Rausch, humans needed to harness the will to power, described as a feeling of increased power that contributed to purpose, passion, and creativity* (Nietzsche). *What we now equate with flow (Flow Research Collective, 2020)
Flow is not something that can be turned on and off. Rather, people cycle through the phases of a flow cycle to enter a mental state where they can perform at their best.
